Out of Towners

Celebrating the love of Josh and Teddi

Up Teddi and Josh The Proposal Our Wedding Day RSVP/Registry Events Journal Our Story wedparty Out of Towners

OK, So you’'ve decided to come to our wedding.  Yeay!

So a few things to think about before you book your flight.

1)      Josh and I will not be leaving for the honeymoon till later that week (or the next).

2)       July 4th is a big time in the Philadelphia area, and there is a whole big celebration leading up to the event (Sunoco Welcome America!)

Where to stay…. What to do.... Maps.... Near Philly.... Weather

We have booked a block of rooms at the following hotel:

1)      Sheraton Airport Suites . We have reserved a rate of $109 for a suite. It includes a full breakfast for two and rooms are being held for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. This hotel is close to the airport and has a shuttle going back and forth to the airport, and will shuttle you to the affair.

Then there are also these fine hotels in the area.

A)      Radnor- an upscale local suburban hotel.  About a 15 minute trip to the affair.

B)      There are several downtown hotels. If you plan to spend most of the trip in Philly sight seeing, then look for a hotel in "Old Town", "Society Hill" or "Independance Park".   If you’re a walker, you can walk to most of the attractions in Philly.  The only time you’ll need a car is to go to the wedding, which is not easily accessible by public transit.

What to do in Philadelphia…

ART

Philadelphia has an amazing art museum, which in itself is a work of art.  (It is FREE early Sunday.)   Rocky is famous for running up the steps.   Walking distance, down the parkway is the Rodin Museum, also free, and filled with amazing sculpture.  Walking in old town is wonderful 1700 architecture and then there are the murals.  In 19?? Philadelphia started a mural project to beautify the city, which has grown and become a main attraction.  Great for a nice day or morning walk.

NATURE

When Philadelphia was planned it included a park in each corner of the city, it also boasts the largest urban park.  Fairmount park really needs a car to see properly.  There is a Japanese tea garden, and wissahiken park is a beautiful place to feed the ducks.

If Gardens are more your speed, a trip to Longwood gardens is an amazing place to visit.  A drive away, but worth the trip for the beauty of the climate.

KIDS

The United States oldest Zoo is in Philadelphia.  Now with a gorilla habitat, a petting zoo, and the seals it was one of Teddi’s favorite places as a kid.  The please touch museum is one of the first kid friendly place that allows kids to touch everything.

Science

The academy of natural history, like a small Smithsonian, with a dinosaur skeleton.  But for science at its best, to go to the Franklin Institute.  Here you can explore (bigger and better than the Exploratorium) all kinds of fun things.  A place to play for the old and young.  It includes a moving steam engine train you can ride, and a human heart you can walk through.  Teddi spent many childhood Saturdays exploring the museum with her friend Hope.  If you’d like something a little creepier. The Mutter museum is not for the queasy of stomach!  Here you can view biological curiosities.  Just look at the website for more information.  Finally there is the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology- fot a more Indiana Jones Version of Science.

History

The pride of Philadelphia. Independence Hall, home of the Declaration of Independence, we have a new constitution center which has all kinds of interactive exhibits, the liberty bell, Ben Franklins workshop and press (yes, you can watch the press work and pick up a piece of old fashioned type from the actual press, Elfreth’s Alley, the oldest continually used housed in the country.  These houses look just as they did 250 years ago.

Food

The reading terminal market is downtown and a fun place to get lunch, in the style of Emeryville marketplace, but with more shops and Pennsylvania Dutch baked goods a treats (something you don’t want to miss).

Don't forget about the Philly cheese steaks, soft pretzels, and Rita's water ice.

Shopping

Ahhh one of Teddi’s favorite things.  If your in the moode for upscale shopping, King of Prussia is the placed to go.  Complete with Neiman Markus, Sacks fifth Avenue, Tiffanys and many more all inside one upscale marble lined mall.  If you are window shopping down a street, Manayunk, old town, and no sales tax on clothing

Culture

We have the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Philadelphia Theatre Company, Walnut Street Theatre, the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, the Academy of Music and the Pennsylvania Ballet.. Forrest Theatre, Arden Theatre Company and American Historical Theatre.

Sports

The area sports teams are the Eagles, Phillies, 76ers, Flyers, Phantoms, Soul, Wings, Kixx, Charge and Barrage.

Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love, the love statue, cheesesteaks, and soft pretzel

So you’ve flown in…

What else is near by?

1)      2 hours away is the big Apple, New York City.  You can take the train to NYC for $30 round trip (off peak) by train

2)      3 hours away in Washington DC, home of the Smithsonian Museums, the capital of the USA, and some very cool monuments.

3)      1.5 hours away is the Jersey shore… Legal gambling in Atlantic City, and the beaches, which have warmer water in June than anytime in Northern California.

4)      1.5 hours away is the Pennsylvania Dutch country.  A place where time stands still, people really can be seen driving horse pulled carriages, and the people are dressed in Mennonite fashion.  Also the famous Hershey chocolate factory is out there.  With a chocolate theme park in “Hershey, PA” of course.
